Suspension Seatposts: Any Recommendations?

My ass gets sore when I ride. I’m 53 and a big guy and the bulk of the riding I do is commuting with a bunch of extra crap I’m hauling along with me, so weight is really not a concern. I know the one pictured is among the costlier options. Thoughts? Recommendations?

I’d go to a bike shop and get sized for a quality saddle, and then get a padded liner to wear under my shorts before I got one of those.

Thanks. I think my saddle is a good fit. I am reluctant to go the route of clothes if I can help it...

Padded shorts or bib shorts will make a big difference (and can be worn under regular looking shorts) along with chamois butter to reduce friction and chaffing. I decent pair of padded shorts is a less costlier solution to try than a suspension seat post. My experience was quite a pit of pogo-stick motion and some loss of pedaling efficiency.

Bike shorts!!! Those seat posts are for bumpy terrain not necessarily for keeping your butt from getting sore. You would be better seved with a

You could try a carbon seat post to take the buzz out of the ride. I have on on my road bike, it help a ton.

My seat height is so precise that a moving seat post would drive me nuts.

I got a carbon cobble stone post from the higher end version of my bike.. Way less obvious than what you show above, but it did make a big difference. Almost like I added slightly larger tires (but my arms know otherwise).

Also I dont always wear ass pads, and I find after getting back into the habit of riding, chode soreness goes away.

I did a 100 mile gravel ride on my Mukluk with a Thudbuster seatpost and it was enough to convince me that it was not worth it. Mrs. osucycler will not give up the Thudbuster on the Powderkeg. I think this is largely because sometimes I miss/hit some big gravel bumps and it saves her.

If I were going to put that kind of money into a post, I’d want some dampening in it. Again: I am not a young man and I my bicycling aesthetic is much more inclined toward a Gentleman Jim pickup truck than a rock crawler. Impala SS rather than Nissan GT-R.

Here is a much cheaper version of the suspension seat post. I think the thudbuster would be the best but if this is an experimental thing try out this trek branded post.

Thank you. A friend has a Thudbuster that he has offered to sell me for $50, but it’s had a bit cut off of it. He’s only used it once. I ordered the adapter shim/sleeve and we’ll try it out tomorrow. This one is the one on the left, the one with less travel. I was not hooked on the Thudbuster per se , just on the concept of putting some spring into my seatpost.

For now, I am trying to avoid buying clothing because, as I say, I commute mostly, and I don’t want to have to change clothes before/after a ride.

Here is the deal. In this physical world we exist in I’d be wrong not to encourage you to show a little athleticism and lift your butt that 1.5mm off the saddle and KEEP TENSION IN YOUR LEGS which will relieve that pounding on your taint and sit bones. No easy answers are available outside a sit up and beg dutch bike that is meant to actually be sat upon with no movement.

Those are the hard facts. What you do with such rare honesty and insight is up to you. :)

Thudbuster is more for MTB hard tails (because of its height) but excellent with the right elastomer in it for your weight.

Ive been using USE SX post for a while on my gravel bike which has been great. Their new model is called Shokpost I think.

However, few are made for people weighing much over 100 kg. My post has less than 20 mm travel in it now...

I have the Thudbuster LT on my fatbike, and I had an older Thudbuster on my first hardtail mountain bike. I like them; they take the edge off the hard hits and make it more tolerable in the saddle. I would say that it is worth $50 plus the price of the adapter is a good way to find out if you like it. As with many things, some like they way they work and feel, others don’t...

I am unlikely to develop the necessary athleticism anytime soon to lift my booty off the seat whilst I am riding.

OK, so the following won’t seem counterintuitive.

One trick involves checking the tension on your spokes. As you are effectively carrying a bike packing load you want them evenly tensioned but looser than your average person. This allows them to deform the spokes which makes the ride smoother.

You also want the largest most pliable tires you can fit under the fork or fenders. If your commute is really covered with tire popping crap try one of the Continental Contact tires. They are heavy and stiff but literally have a 1/4 of thick foam under the rubber that dampens the ride considerably. They are highly flat proof.

See if your weight is within the range for a Specialized Cobble Gobbler. Suspension seatposts have always been not so great. A seat that matches well with the frequencies it blocks will go a long ways towards smoothing out bumps without rebounding like a suspension post.

Last is upping the quality of your stem and bar, if they are cheap as chips. This with gel padded grips/under the tape will cover pretty much advancement your body can expect to realize.
